UTS7000A-VSA: Vector Signal Analysis

Overview

The UTS7000A-VSA software option provides general-purpose vector signal analysis for digitally modulated signals—the Swiss Army knife for any engineer working with custom, proprietary, or non-standard digital modulation. While the LTE and 5G NR options (FDD-LTE, TDD-LTE, NR) handle standards-specific signal analysis, the VSA option handles everything else: satellite communications using BPSK/QPSK/8PSK, digital microwave radio links using 64/128/256-QAM, proprietary IoT protocols, custom FSK telemetry, MSK modulation for data links, and any other digitally modulated signal you need to demodulate and characterize.

The VSA performs full vector demodulation—recovering the I/Q baseband signal, synchronizing to the symbol timing, and computing EVM, phase error, magnitude error, frequency offset, and constellation quality metrics. This is the option that turns your spectrum analyzer from a power-versus-frequency display into a modulation quality measurement instrument.

When You Need VSA Instead of (or In Addition to) Standard-Specific Options

Satellite Communications: Satellite modems use BPSK, QPSK, 8PSK, 16APSK, and 32APSK modulation per DVB-S2/S2X standards—but these aren't LTE or NR signals. The VSA option demodulates these waveforms and reports EVM, providing the modulation quality measurement that determines link margin and data throughput. For satellite terminal development and field deployment verification, this is essential.

Digital Microwave Radio: Point-to-point microwave links use high-order QAM (64-QAM through 256-QAM and beyond) with proprietary framing. The VSA option doesn't need to know the frame structure—it demodulates the underlying modulation and measures EVM, constellation quality, and carrier/timing errors. This is how you verify that a microwave radio meets its modulation quality specification during development and deployment.

Custom and Proprietary Protocols: If your company has designed a custom wireless protocol—industrial telemetry, military tactical radio, proprietary IoT—the VSA option is your only path to calibrated EVM and constellation measurements. Standard-specific options won't recognize your signal; the VSA works with any supported modulation type regardless of higher-layer protocol.

Component-Level Testing: When you're characterizing an amplifier, mixer, or filter, you often drive it with a known modulated signal and measure EVM degradation at the output. The VSA option enables this test with any modulation type, providing the AM/AM and AM/PM linearity insight that pure spectrum analysis can't reveal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need VSA if I already have the NR or LTE options?

The NR and LTE options handle 3GPP-standard signals specifically—they understand the frame structure, reference signals, and physical channels of those standards. VSA is for everything else: satellite, microwave radio, custom protocols, component testing with modulated stimuli, and any signal that isn't LTE or NR. Many labs need both: standard-specific options for production/compliance testing and VSA for development and non-standard signal work.

What analysis bandwidth does VSA use?

VSA demodulation bandwidth is determined by your analyzer's bandwidth configuration: 20 MHz standard, or up to 255 MHz with optional bandwidth upgrades. The maximum symbol rate is the analysis bandwidth divided by the oversampling rate. For a 20 MHz standard configuration with 4× oversampling, that's up to 5 Msps. With the B255 option, you can demodulate signals up to approximately 64 Msps at 4× oversampling.
