UTS7000A-NR: 5G NR Demodulation Analysis

Overview

The UTS7000A-NR software option provides comprehensive 5G New Radio signal analysis per 3GPP TS 38.104, covering both FR1 (sub-6 GHz) and FR2 (mmWave) frequency ranges. This option demodulates 5G NR signals, measures EVM per the 3GPP specification, displays constellations, and provides per-resource-block quality analysis for carrier bandwidths from 5 MHz to 100 MHz with subcarrier spacings of 15 kHz and 30 kHz.

5G NR is the air interface for every new cellular deployment worldwide—sub-6 GHz for broad coverage and mmWave for extreme capacity. The UTS7000A's frequency coverage from 2 Hz to 40 GHz positions it uniquely to cover both FR1 and FR2 bands on a single instrument: n77/n78/n79 for sub-6 GHz C-band, and n257/n258/n260 for mmWave. The NR option provides the standards-compliant demodulation and measurement that turns spectrum monitoring into signal quality analysis.

5G NR Measurement Capabilities

3GPP-Compliant EVM Measurement: EVM is the gatekeeper specification for 5G transmitter compliance. 3GPP TS 38.104 defines EVM limits for each modulation scheme: ~17.5% for QPSK, ~12.5% for 16-QAM, ~8% for 64-QAM, and ~3.5% for 256-QAM. The NR option measures EVM per the standard—including correct channel estimation, equalization, and phase tracking—providing the number that determines whether your transmitter passes or fails 3GPP requirements.

FR1 Sub-6 GHz Analysis: Bands n77 (3.3–4.2 GHz), n78 (3.3–3.8 GHz), and n79 (4.4–5.0 GHz) are the C-band workhorses of global 5G deployment. Carrier bandwidths range from 10 MHz to 100 MHz. The NR option handles all of these, and the UTS7000A's 13.6 GHz minimum frequency coverage ensures every UTS7000A model supports FR1 analysis. For carriers wider than 20 MHz, a bandwidth option (B40 for 40 MHz carriers, B85 for 80 MHz, B160 or B255 for 100 MHz) is needed to capture the full carrier in real-time.

FR2 mmWave Analysis: Bands n257 (26.5–29.5 GHz), n258 (24.25–27.5 GHz), and n260 (37–40 GHz) deliver multi-gigabit 5G connectivity. Testing at these frequencies requires an analyzer that actually covers the bands—the UTS7026A covers n258, the UTS7032A adds n257, and the UTS7040A covers all three including n260. The NR option's demodulation works identically at mmWave frequencies, providing the same EVM, constellation, and resource block analysis at 28 GHz as at 3.5 GHz.

Complete Signal Characterization: Beyond EVM, the NR option reports frequency error, symbol clock deviation, I/Q offset, I/Q gain imbalance, I/Q quadrature error, I/Q timing skew, magnitude error, phase error, and sync correlation. These detailed impairment metrics tell you not just that your signal has poor EVM, but why—enabling targeted debugging of transmitter hardware problems.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which analyzer model do I need for FR2 mmWave testing?

It depends on the band: n258 (24.25–27.5 GHz) requires the UTS7026A or higher. n257 (26.5–29.5 GHz) requires the UTS7032A or higher (the UTS7026A covers up to 26.5 GHz, which only catches the very bottom of n257). n260 (37–40 GHz) requires the UTS7040A. For comprehensive FR2 testing across all three mmWave bands, the UTS7040A is the recommended choice.

What bandwidth option do I need for 5G NR testing?

For single-carrier demodulation: 20 MHz standard bandwidth handles carriers up to 20 MHz. For 40–50 MHz carriers: B40 minimum. For 80 MHz carriers: B85 minimum. For 100 MHz carriers: B160 or B255. The NR option demodulates one carrier at a time, so the bandwidth option needs to accommodate the carrier bandwidth you're testing. For wideband carrier aggregation monitoring (viewing multiple carriers simultaneously in RTSA mode), the bandwidth option determines your total observable span.

Do I also need the LTE options for 5G NSA testing?

For Non-Standalone (NSA) 5G deployments, the LTE anchor carrier and 5G NR carrier operate simultaneously. To analyze both, you need the NR option plus the appropriate LTE option (FDD-LTE or TDD-LTE). You can measure each carrier separately by tuning the analyzer to the respective frequency.

Complete 5G NR analysis from FR1 to FR2 mmWave—3GPP-compliant EVM, constellation, and signal quality measurement on a single instrument.
