UTS7000A-P32: 32 GHz Preamplifier

Overview

The UTS7000A-P32 preamplifier option adds an internal low-noise preamplifier covering 100 kHz to 32 GHz, providing sensitivity enhancement through the critical Ka-band and lower mmWave frequencies. At 28–32 GHz, free-space path loss at 1 meter is already 62 dB—and that's before cable losses, connector transitions, and any fixture attenuation in your measurement chain. The P32 preamplifier recovers 12–16 dB of effective sensitivity, ensuring signals at mmWave frequencies remain measurable rather than lost in the noise.

This is the recommended preamplifier for engineers working in 5G FR2 band n257 (26.5–29.5 GHz), n258 (24.25–27.5 GHz), Ka-band satellite uplinks (27.5–31 GHz), and 28 GHz fixed wireless access (FWA) development.

⚠ Factory-Installed Option: The preamplifier is a hardware option that must be ordered with the analyzer at time of purchase. It cannot be added in the field after delivery. Specify UTS7000A-P32 when placing your order.

Why Ka-Band Work Demands a Preamplifier

5G mmWave Base Station and UE Testing: 5G NR FR2 bands n257 and n258 center around 28 GHz, where device output power is limited and propagation losses are severe. Characterizing UE transmitters, small cell power amplifiers, and beamforming antenna modules requires measuring signals that arrive at the analyzer well below -80 dBm after test fixture losses. The P32 preamplifier ensures the analyzer has sufficient sensitivity headroom for EVM, ACLR, and spurious emission measurements at these frequencies.

Ka-Band Satellite Ground Segment: Ka-band satellite uplinks (27.5–31 GHz) and downlinks (17.7–21.2 GHz) involve testing earth station amplifiers, BUCs (block upconverters), and feed assemblies where test signals can be quite weak after filtering and directional coupling. The P32 preamplifier provides the sensitivity margin needed for noise figure estimation, gain characterization, and spectral purity verification of satellite ground equipment.

mmWave Component Characterization: Evaluating mixer conversion loss, LNA gain/noise figure, and filter insertion loss at 26–32 GHz often produces output signal levels well below -60 dBm. Without a preamplifier, your measurement accuracy degrades as signals approach the analyzer noise floor. The P32 keeps your measurement in the linear, accurate region of the analyzer's dynamic range.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I add the preamplifier later?

No. This is a factory-installed hardware option. Order it with your analyzer or plan to use an external preamplifier—which introduces calibration complexity, additional connectors, and potential reliability concerns that the integrated solution avoids.

I have a UTS7032A. Should I choose P26 or P32?

If you work above 26.5 GHz—5G mmWave at 28 GHz, Ka-band satellite, or component testing through 32 GHz—choose the P32. It covers the full range of your analyzer. The P26 stops at 26.5 GHz, which means no preamplification for the upper 5.5 GHz of your instrument's range—exactly where you're most likely to need it due to higher path losses and cable attenuation at mmWave frequencies.

Is the compression point reduction at 26.5–32 GHz a concern?

The -32 dBm compression point above 26.5 GHz reflects the inherent tradeoffs of mmWave preamplifier design. In practice, the signals you're using the preamplifier to measure are already well below -32 dBm—that's why you need the preamplifier in the first place. For high-power mmWave measurements, simply toggle the preamplifier off.

mmWave signals disappear fast—the P32 preamplifier ensures your analyzer keeps up through 32 GHz. Order it now; you can't add it later.
