UTS7000A-TDD-LTE: TDD-LTE Demodulation Analysis

Overview

The UTS7000A-TDD-LTE software option provides 3GPP-compliant TDD-LTE signal analysis for systems using Time Division Duplex, where uplink and downlink share the same frequency and alternate in time. TDD-LTE is the air interface for LTE band 41 (the primary US C-band deployment), band 48 (CBRS—the 3.5 GHz shared spectrum band driving private LTE/5G enterprise networks), and bands 38/39/40/42 used extensively in China and Asia-Pacific markets.

TDD systems have unique measurement challenges that FDD testing doesn't encounter: the uplink/downlink switching point creates transients, the subframe configuration affects timing measurements, and guard periods between uplink and downlink must be verified. The TDD-LTE option handles all of this, including automatic detection of the TDD configuration and correct subframe-by-subframe demodulation.

Why TDD Analysis Requires a Dedicated Option

UL/DL Switching Transient Analysis: In TDD systems, the transmitter switches between uplink and downlink on the same frequency—and those transitions generate transient spectral emissions. The TDD-LTE option, combined with the UTS7000A's 100% POI real-time analysis, captures these switching events that can cause interference to adjacent channels or time slots. Swept analyzers routinely miss these transients because they're not looking at the right frequency at the right time.

Subframe Configuration Awareness: TDD-LTE supports 7 different uplink/downlink configurations (0–6) that determine which subframes are uplink, downlink, or special. The TDD-LTE option automatically identifies the configuration and demodulates each subframe type correctly—you don't need to manually specify the frame structure.

CBRS/Band 48 Private Network Testing: CBRS at 3.5 GHz is driving rapid growth in private LTE and 5G enterprise networks—manufacturing plants, warehouses, ports, campuses, and hospitals deploying their own cellular infrastructure. These deployments use TDD-LTE (and increasingly TDD 5G NR) and require the same transmitter compliance testing as public networks. The TDD-LTE option provides the EVM, ACLR, and power measurements needed for FCC Part 96 compliance and SAS (Spectrum Access System) coordination.

Time-Slot Power Analysis: TDD systems require verification that power levels are correct during each time slot and that the transmitter is properly silenced during receive time slots. The TDD-LTE option reports power per subframe, enabling verification of the complete TDD power profile including guard periods and switching times.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need TDD-LTE for CBRS testing?

Yes. CBRS (band 48, 3550–3700 MHz) uses TDD-LTE as its primary air interface for existing LTE-based CBRS deployments. If you're deploying, manufacturing, or testing CBRS equipment, the TDD-LTE option provides the 3GPP-compliant measurements required for FCC Part 96 compliance. For 5G NR CBRS deployments, you'll additionally need the NR option.

How does real-time analysis help with TDD testing?

TDD systems are inherently bursty—the transmitter is only active during its assigned time slots. Traditional swept analyzers may sweep through a frequency during the wrong time slot and report no signal or incorrect power. The UTS7000A's 100% POI real-time analysis captures every transmission burst regardless of timing alignment, ensuring you never miss a subframe. Combined with the TDD-LTE option's subframe-aware demodulation, this provides comprehensive TDD characterization that swept-only analyzers fundamentally cannot match.

TDD-LTE EVM and switching analysis for band 41, CBRS, and global TDD deployments—capturing every time slot with 100% POI.
