UTS7000A-P40: 40 GHz Preamplifier

Overview

The UTS7000A-P40 preamplifier option adds an internal low-noise preamplifier covering 100 kHz to 40 GHz—the full frequency range of the flagship UTS7040A. This is the preamplifier for engineers who need sensitivity from audio frequencies through Ka-band and beyond, with no gaps. At 40 GHz, a 1-meter coaxial cable can introduce 3+ dB of loss, connector transitions add more, and free-space path loss at 1 meter exceeds 64 dB. The P40 preamplifier recovers 12–16 dB of effective noise floor, turning marginal measurements into confident ones.

The P40 is essential for 5G FR2 development across all mmWave bands (n257/n258/n260), complete Ka-band satellite system testing, 39 GHz FWA equipment characterization, and 77 GHz automotive radar sub-harmonic analysis at the 38.5 GHz second harmonic.

⚠ Factory-Installed Option: The preamplifier is a hardware option that must be ordered with the analyzer at time of purchase. It cannot be added in the field after delivery. Specify UTS7000A-P40 when placing your order.

Full-Range mmWave Sensitivity

5G FR2 Across All Bands: The three primary 5G mmWave bands—n257 (26.5–29.5 GHz), n258 (24.25–27.5 GHz), and n260 (37–40 GHz)—all fall within the P40's coverage. Band n260 at 39 GHz is particularly demanding: signals are weaker, cables are lossier, and antenna patterns are tighter. The P40 ensures your UTS7040A can handle receiver sensitivity, spurious emission, and beam quality measurements across every 5G mmWave band without external amplifiers cluttering your test setup.

77 GHz Automotive Radar Sub-Harmonic Testing: While the UTS7040A doesn't directly cover 77 GHz, the second harmonic of a 77 GHz radar signal falls at 38.5 GHz—well within range. Sub-harmonic analysis is a practical technique for characterizing 77 GHz radar modules using a 40 GHz analyzer, and the P40 preamplifier ensures you have the sensitivity to detect weak harmonic and spurious products at these frequencies.

Q-Band and Ka-Band Satellite: Complete Ka-band satellite system testing—from Ku-band downlinks (10.7–12.75 GHz) through Ka-band uplinks (27.5–31 GHz) and into Q-band (33–40 GHz) inter-satellite links—all with enhanced sensitivity. The P40 eliminates the need for external preamplifiers that would otherwise be required at the upper end of the frequency range.

Wideband Component Testing Through 40 GHz: Characterizing broadband amplifiers, filters, mixers, and antennas that operate across wide frequency ranges benefits from consistent preamplifier coverage. The P40 provides sensitivity enhancement across the entire 100 kHz to 40 GHz span, so you get accurate low-level measurements whether you're working at 2 GHz or 38 GHz.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I add the preamplifier later?

No. This is a factory-installed hardware option. If you're investing in a UTS7040A—the flagship 40 GHz model—seriously consider the P40. The incremental cost at time of purchase is a fraction of the analyzer price, and the alternative (external mmWave preamplifiers) adds complexity, cost, and calibration burden to every measurement.

Can I use a lower-cost P26 or P32 on my UTS7040A?

Yes, but you'll lose preamplification above 26.5 or 32 GHz respectively. If your work at 32–40 GHz is limited to high-power signals (where a preamp isn't needed), a P26 or P32 may suffice. But if you need sensitivity at the upper end of the range—which is exactly where cable losses and path losses make measurements most difficult—the P40 is the right choice.

Full-range sensitivity from 100 kHz to 40 GHz—order the P40 with your UTS7040A because this is one decision you can't revisit.
