UNI-T USG3000-PM Pulse Modulation Option for USG3000 Series RF Signal Generators

Overview

The USG3000-PM is a premium pulse modulation option for the USG3000 series RF signal generators, compatible with both the USG3000M (Analog) and USG3000V (Digital Vector) series. This option enhances your USG3000 generator with comprehensive pulse modulation capabilities, enabling the creation of precisely controlled pulsed RF signals essential for radar system development, wireless communications testing, and RF component characterization.

Key Features

  • High On-Off Ratio: Achieves up to 80 dB on-off ratio for clean, well-defined pulse generation
  • Fast Transition Time: Rising/falling times of less than 20 ns (typical) for accurate edge definition
  • Multiple Pulse Modes: Includes free-run, square, externally triggered, adjustable doublet, gated, and pulse train modes
  • Customizable Pulse Trains: Create complex sequences of pulses with varying widths and delays
  • Flexible Configuration: Use internal or external pulse sources for maximum versatility

Application Examples

Radar System Development

Simulate radar transmitter pulses with precise timing and amplitude control. The USG3000-PM allows engineers to:

  • Generate pulse repetition intervals (PRIs) for different radar modes
  • Test radar receiver sensitivity with controlled pulse widths and amplitudes
  • Verify radar signal processing algorithms with customized pulse patterns
  • Simulate complex radar environments for system validation

Wireless Communications Testing

Evaluate pulsed communication systems with accurate pulse modulation:

  • Test time division multiplexing (TDM) systems
  • Characterize transmitter and receiver performance under pulsed conditions
  • Verify system behavior during pulsed interference conditions
  • Evaluate power amplifier performance during pulsed operation

Electronic Component Characterization

Characterize RF components under pulsed conditions:

  • Measure amplifier gain compression during pulsed operation
  • Test filter response to pulsed signals
  • Evaluate thermal effects in components using pulsed excitation
  • Characterize receiver recovery time from strong pulse signals

Combined with the USG3000-PG Narrow Pulse Generator

When paired with the USG3000-PG narrow pulse generator option, the USG3000-PM delivers its full 80 dB on-off ratio with pulse widths as narrow as 20 ns. This combination unlocks advanced test capabilities that neither option provides alone:

  • Automotive Radar Validation: Generate high-isolation narrow pulses to test 77 GHz FMCW radar receiver sensitivity and range resolution, where clean pulse edges and high on-off ratio are critical for accurate target simulation in ADAS and autonomous driving development
  • 5G and IoT Pulsed Interference Testing: Simulate narrow-pulse interference scenarios to validate how base stations, small cells, and IoT devices respond to transient RF events — verifying compliance with coexistence and immunity requirements
  • Industrial Radar and Level Measurement Sensor Testing: Validate pulsed radar sensors used in industrial process control, tank level measurement, and proximity detection by generating precisely timed narrow pulses that simulate target reflections at various distances
  • RF Component Recovery Time Measurement: Characterize how quickly amplifiers, receivers, and other RF components recover after exposure to a strong narrow pulse — requiring both the narrow pulse width from the PG and the high on-off ratio from the PM to distinguish the recovery response from residual leakage

Compatible USG3000 Series Models

The USG3000-PM option can be installed on any model in the USG3000 series, including both the Analog (M-series) and Digital Vector (V-series) generators:

USG3000M Analog Series

  • USG3045M (9 kHz to 4.5 GHz)
  • USG3045M-P (9 kHz to 4.5 GHz with mechanical attenuator)
  • USG3065M (9 kHz to 6.5 GHz)
  • USG3065M-P (9 kHz to 6.5 GHz with mechanical attenuator)

USG3000V Digital Vector Series

  • USG3045V (9 kHz to 4.5 GHz)
  • USG3045V-P (9 kHz to 4.5 GHz with mechanical attenuator)
  • USG3065V (9 kHz to 6.5 GHz)
  • USG3065V-P (9 kHz to 6.5 GHz with mechanical attenuator)

Once installed, pulse modulation capability is seamlessly integrated into the generator's user interface, with dedicated controls for all pulse parameters. The option works in conjunction with other modulation types for maximum flexibility in signal creation.

Installation

The USG3000-PM option can be installed at the time of purchase or added later as an upgrade. For existing units, the option is enabled through a license file installation procedure that can be performed by the user.
