UNI-T USG5000-PM Pulse Modulation Option for USG5000 Series RF Signal Generators

Overview

The USG5000-PM pulse modulation option adds advanced pulse modulation capabilities to the USG5000 series microwave signal generators, compatible with both the USG5000M (Analog) and USG5000V (Digital Vector) series. This high-performance option enables precise generation of pulsed RF signals across the extended frequency ranges of the USG5000 series, making it ideal for sophisticated radar system development, satellite communications testing, and millimeter-wave applications.

Key Features

  • Superior On-Off Ratio: Up to 80 dB (≤ 6.5 GHz) and 70 dB (≤ 22 GHz) for clean pulse definition
  • Fast Transition Times: Rising/falling times < 20 ns for accurate edge definition
  • Multiple Operating Modes: Free-run, square, external triggered, adjustable doublet, gated, and custom pulse train modes
  • Programmable Pulse Sequences: Create complex pulse patterns with user-defined timing parameters
  • Wide Frequency Coverage: Full pulse modulation across the entire frequency range of the generator
  • Flexible Triggering: Internal, external, or bus-triggered operation

  • Characterize proximity detection and motion sensing modules
  • Verify performance of commercial air traffic and ground surveillance radar systems

Combined with the USG5000-PG Narrow Pulse Generator

When paired with the USG5000-PG narrow pulse generator option, the USG5000-PM delivers its full on-off ratio (80 dB at ≤ 6.5 GHz, 70 dB at ≤ 22 GHz) with pulse widths as narrow as 20 ns. This combination unlocks advanced test capabilities that neither option provides alone:

  • Automotive Radar Validation: Generate high-isolation narrow pulses to test 77 GHz FMCW radar receiver sensitivity and range resolution, where clean pulse edges and high on-off ratio are critical for accurate target simulation in ADAS and autonomous driving development
  • 5G and IoT Pulsed Interference Testing: Simulate narrow-pulse interference scenarios to validate how base stations, small cells, and IoT devices respond to transient RF events at microwave frequencies — verifying compliance with coexistence and immunity requirements
  • Industrial Radar and Level Measurement Sensor Testing: Validate pulsed radar sensors used in industrial process control, tank level measurement, and proximity detection by generating precisely timed narrow pulses that simulate target reflections at various distances
  • RF Component Recovery Time Measurement: Characterize how quickly amplifiers, receivers, and other microwave components recover after exposure to a strong narrow pulse — requiring both the narrow pulse width from the PG and the high on-off ratio from the PM to distinguish the recovery response from residual leakage

Compatible USG5000 Series Models

The USG5000-PM option works with all models in the USG5000 series, including both the Analog (M-series) and Digital Vector (V-series) generators:

USG5000M Analog Series

  • USG5014M (9 kHz to 14 GHz)
  • USG5014M-P (9 kHz to 14 GHz with mechanical attenuator)
  • USG5022M-P (9 kHz to 22 GHz with mechanical attenuator)

USG5000V Digital Vector Series

  • USG5014V (9 kHz to 14 GHz)
  • USG5014V-P (9 kHz to 14 GHz with mechanical attenuator)
  • USG5022V-P (9 kHz to 22 GHz with mechanical attenuator)

The pulse modulation functions are seamlessly integrated into the generator's user interface, with dedicated controls for all pulse parameters accessible through the front panel and remote interfaces.

Compatibility with Other Options

The USG5000-PM pulse modulation option works in conjunction with:

  • USG5000-PG narrow pulse generator option for ultra-narrow pulse generation
  • USG5000-PK power meter option for accurate power control during pulse modulation
  • USG5000-GPIB interface for remote control of pulse parameters

Installation

The USG5000-PM option can be installed at the time of purchase or added later as an upgrade. For existing units, the option is enabled through a license file installation procedure that can be performed by the user.
