UNI-T USG3000-PG Narrow Pulse Generator Option for USG3000 Series RF Signal Generators

Overview

The USG3000-PG is a specialized narrow pulse generator option for the USG3000 series RF signal generators, compatible with both the USG3000M (Analog) and USG3000V (Digital Vector) series. This advanced option enhances your USG3000 generator with high-precision, narrow pulse generation capabilities, enabling the creation of extremely short RF pulses essential for automotive radar testing, high-speed digital communications, and advanced research applications.

Key Features

  • Ultra-Narrow Pulse Width: Generate pulses as narrow as 20 ns with 10 ns resolution
  • Precise Timing Control: Fine adjustment of pulse parameters with 10 ns precision
  • Extended Pulse Period Range: Create pulse patterns from 40 ns to 42 seconds
  • High-Resolution Delay Control: Set pulse delays with 10 ns resolution
  • Flexible Triggering Options: Free-running or triggered operation for versatile test setups

Application Examples

Automotive Millimeter-Wave Radar Testing

The USG3000-PG is ideal for testing automotive radar systems:

  • Generate precise timing pulses for frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar testing
  • Simulate target returns with specific pulse characteristics
  • Test radar receiver detection thresholds with precisely controlled pulse widths
  • Verify radar signal processing performance with complex pulse sequences

High-Speed Digital Communications

Evaluate high-data-rate communications systems with accurate narrow pulse generation:

  • Test pulse recovery in receiver circuits
  • Evaluate timing margins in digital communications systems
  • Characterize jitter performance with precisely controlled pulse timing
  • Simulate interference scenarios with narrow pulse bursts

Industrial Radar and Sensing Applications

Support the development and validation of commercial radar and sensing products:

  • Test pulsed radar sensors used in tank level measurement and process control
  • Validate proximity detection sensors for industrial automation and robotics
  • Characterize motion detection and occupancy sensors for building management systems
  • Develop and test pulse-based sensing technologies for commercial IoT applications

Semiconductor Device Testing

Characterize high-speed semiconductor devices:

  • Measure switching characteristics with precise pulse timing
  • Evaluate recovery time of RF components
  • Test high-speed digital circuits with controlled pulse widths
  • Characterize on/off transients in RF transistors

Application Example: 77 GHz Automotive Radar Receiver Validation

A common challenge in automotive radar development is verifying that a 77 GHz FMCW radar receiver can detect weak target returns in the presence of strong nearby reflections. Using the USG3000-PG together with the required USG3000-PM pulse modulation option, engineers can simulate this scenario with high fidelity:

  1. Configure the USG3000 generator to the radar's operating frequency (e.g., 76–77 GHz using an external upconverter or at an IF frequency for direct injection testing).
  2. Use the USG3000-PG to generate narrow pulses (e.g., 50 ns width) representing short-range target returns, with the USG3000-PM providing 80 dB on-off ratio to ensure clean pulse isolation.
  3. Adjust the pulse delay in 10 ns steps to simulate targets at different ranges, verifying the receiver's ability to resolve closely spaced returns.
  4. Vary the pulse amplitude to determine the receiver's minimum detectable signal level under pulsed conditions.

This test workflow validates radar range resolution, receiver sensitivity, and dynamic range — all critical performance parameters for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving applications.

Integration Requirements

The USG3000-PG option requires the USG3000-PM pulse modulation option to be installed first. Together, these options provide comprehensive pulse generation capabilities from standard to ultra-narrow pulse widths with high on-off ratio.

Compatible USG3000 Series Models

The USG3000-PG option can be installed on any model in the USG3000 series, including both the Analog (M-series) and Digital Vector (V-series) generators:
