Overview

The UDP6721 is a 180 W programmable DC switching power supply with a 60 V Γ— 8 A wide-range output, RS-232 with full SCPI control, 600-group memory, list mode, and OVP/OCP/OTP protection.

Step-up current within the 60V class. Same chassis as UDP6720 but 8A instead of 5A β€” useful when a 24V or 48V load wants more current than 100W can deliver.

It's built for a workbench that runs the same supply across product design, board debug, and deployed test fixtures β€” affordability where the spec sheet doesn't punish it, precision where the load demands it, and an interface direct enough that the next person sitting down doesn't need a manual.

Across the Design. Debug. Deploy.β„’ Lifecycle

The UDP6700 series fits the workflow we call Design. Debug. Deploy. β€” the three-act cycle most engineering teams actually run a power supply through. In Design, list mode and 600 memory groups let a planned voltage profile execute repeatably while the rest of the bench attends to capture and analysis. In Debug, OVP/OCP/OTP protections, remote sense compensation, and a 4-digit dual LED display make it safe to push a marginal load and see exactly what's happening at the terminals. In Deploy, RS-232 with full SCPI command coverage means the same supply that ran on the design bench can drop into a production rack and be controlled by the same scripts. One instrument, three phases, no relearning.

Key Features

  • 180 W rated power, 60 V Γ— 8 A wide envelope β€” Up to 60 V at 3 A or 22.5 V at 8 A β€” same 180 W envelope, no second instrument
  • Wide-range output with power ratio 3.0 β€” one supply covers V/I combinations that would otherwise require two
  • Programmable list mode: 9 steps per list, 1 ms to 9999 s per step, repeat 1–9999 cycles
  • Trigger delayer: 9 trigger groups, 1 ms to 9999 s per trigger
  • 600 memory groups (M1: 100 / M2: 100 / M3: 400) for stored output configurations
  • Over-voltage, over-current, and over-temperature protection with set ranges 0–110% of rated
  • Remote sense compensation for accurate output at the load terminals over long leads
  • RS-232 with full SCPI command coverage; a software-only PC controller is included
  • Smart fan: load- and temperature-controlled for low audible noise at light load
  • 4-digit dual LED display with simultaneous V and I readout
  • OVP/OCP thresholds set with a long-press on the V or I key β€” no menu dive
  • Knob and direct numeric entry on the front panel; both work the same way
  • Software calibration retains traceability without an internal trim-pot pass
  • 3+2 industry-leading warranty (3 years standard + 2 years extended) β€” covers the instrument across a normal Design–Debug–Deploy lifecycle and into long deployment

Wide-Range Output (Power Ratio 3.0)

Power ratio 3.0 means the rated output envelope can be redistributed between voltage and current as the load demands. Where a fixed-rectangle supply would force a tradeoff β€” buy enough volts or enough amps β€” the UDP6700 lets you trade one for the other along a constant-power curve. Most general-purpose bench work sits inside that envelope, so one supply does the work of two.

The exact V Γ— I corners depend on rated power; the spec table below shows the maximum voltage at rated current and the maximum current at rated voltage for this SKU.

Remote Sense Compensation

UDP6700 remote sense terminals on rear panel

Long leads drop volts. At 5 A through 1 m of 18-AWG wire, the lead drop is around 100 mV β€” enough to sour a 3.3 V regulator test or starve a battery cycler. Remote sense routes the regulation feedback past the leads to the load terminals themselves, holding the programmed voltage where it actually matters.

The remote sense terminals are wired separately from the output terminals on the rear panel; the supply auto-detects sense connection and falls back to local sensing if the wires are removed.

OVP / OCP / OTP Protection

Three independent protections cover the most common ways a load fails: a short or low-impedance fault drives current up (OCP), a misconfigured DUT pulls voltage out of spec (OVP), or a sustained over-load heats the supply itself (OTP). All three trip the output off and display a fault state on the front panel.

OVP and OCP thresholds are set with a long-press on the V or I key β€” set the threshold once, run the load. No menu dive, no nested submenu. OTP is internal and not user-configurable.

List Mode and Trigger Delayer

UDP6700 list mode programming interface

List mode runs a 9-step voltage and current sequence with each step held from 1 ms to 9999 s and the whole list repeated 1 to 9999 cycles. Useful for battery cycling, automotive cold-crank profiles, and any scripted sequence that needs to run unattended.

Trigger delayer fires 9 trigger groups with delays between 1 ms and 9999 s. Useful when an output transition needs to wait for an external event β€” DUT settling, fixture motion, an oven step β€” before moving to the next setting.

600 Memory Groups (M1 / M2 / M3)

Three memory banks store 100, 100, and 400 output configurations. M1 and M2 are typically used for active recipes (the configuration in the front-panel knob workflow); M3 holds 400 long-term recall configurations for products and DUTs the bench works on regularly.

Each memory entry stores voltage setting, current setting, OVP and OCP thresholds, and the slope/list state. Recall is a single front-panel keypress.

RS-232 with Full SCPI Command Coverage

UDP6700 software interface showing remote SCPI control

RS-232 with full SCPI command set. Voltage and current setpoint, OVP/OCP threshold, list configuration, memory recall, output enable, and readback all accessible from a host script. The included Windows PC software exposes the same commands through a GUI for users who don't want to write code.

RS-232 is honest about what it is: one supply per host port, no LAN, no USBTMC. For multi-instrument benches with more than one programmable supply or for remote/automated environments, the UDP6900B series adds USB, LAN with web control, RS-485 with Modbus, and multi-machine daisy-chain.

Thermal Derating

The UDP6721 delivers full 180 W rated output at ambient temperatures up to about 30 Β°C. Above that, output power derates linearly to maintain internal junction temperatures inside the safe envelope. The derating curve below shows the exact relationship between ambient temperature and rated power for this SKU. Operating temperature range is 0–40 Β°C.

The smart fan adjusts speed automatically based on load and internal temperature; light-load operation is quiet, and the supply only ramps fan speed when thermal headroom requires it.

Applications

Industrial Maintenance Bench (Higher Current)

For benches where the loads run heavier than 5 A β€” 24 V solenoids and contactors that draw 6–7 A inrush, 12 V automotive subsystems that need real margin, multi-channel LED arrays. Same 60 V ceiling as UDP6720 but 8 A continuous instead of 5 A.

Battery and Charger Bench

180 W is enough to charge most single-cell and 4S Li-ion packs at a meaningful rate, run small Pb-acid cycles, and source enough current for fixture-driven battery work without requiring a UDP6730. List mode runs a charge profile; OCP and OVP enforce safe envelopes.

Embedded R&D, High-Inrush Loads

For boards where the prototype draws more than 5 A on power-up β€” switching front-ends, motor drivers, multi-DUT fixtures. UDP6721's 8 A capability prevents an inrush event from tripping current limit and aborting the bring-up.

Production Test Station

Drop-in replacement for UDP6720 on lines that have outgrown the 5 A envelope. Same UI, same SCPI command set, same memory model β€” only the rating changes.

Frequently Asked Questions

UDP6721 vs UDP6720 β€” when does the upgrade pay?

Same chassis, same UI, same 60 V ceiling. UDP6721 trades a small ripple/regulation increase (≀0.02% + 5 mA load regulation vs ≀0.01% + 3 mA on UDP6720) for nearly double the current rating (8 A vs 5 A) and 80% more rated power (180 W vs 100 W). The upgrade pays whenever the bench load draws more than 5 A continuous, has inrush above 5 A, or needs more headroom at 24 V or 48 V.

Where does this fit relative to the UDP6900B series?

The UDP6900B series is the next step up. Same form factor, same wide-range output philosophy, but adds USB and LAN with web control, RS-485 with Modbus, multi-machine daisy-chain, slope-mode output, auto-range mode, and a built-in DVM. If a single supply on a single host port satisfies the bench, the UDP6700 is the right choice; if the bench has multiple programmable supplies, needs LAN access, or runs scripted multi-instrument tests, UDP6900B is the right step up.

Where does this fit relative to the UDP3000C series?

The UDP3000C series is multi-channel linear, not single-channel switching. If the bench needs two or three independent isolated outputs in one chassis (rail + bias + reference, for example), UDP3000C is the right tool. UDP6700 is the right tool when a single high-power output beats three medium-power outputs.

What's in the box?

Power cord, RS-232 cable, quick-start guide, factory calibration certificate. Windows PC software is a free download from uni-trendus.com. Test leads with alligator clips are an optional accessory and not included in the base configuration.

Is the chassis 1U rack-mountable?

No. The chassis is 174 mm tall (about 6.85 inches), which is a desktop form factor β€” not 1U (44.45 mm). It will fit on a shelf in a standard 19-inch rack but will not mount in a 1U slot. UNI-T does not currently offer a rack-mount kit for the UDP6700 series.
